What to do at home to improve writing and communication

Our previous blog post was all about what to look for in a writing class and curriculum to ensure your young writer is getting everything they need. Unfortunately, the school day is short and the list of learning objectives is long; teachers and schools don’t always have the time or resources to provide everything we listed in our previous blog. If that’s the case, here are 5 things you can do outside of school to help build essential writing and communication skills:

  1. Read what your kids write. When writing goes unread, it starts to feel like a meaningless task to check off. Your young writer will be much more invested in their writing when they know someone will be reading and celebrating their work!

  2. Talk with your kids about their writing, even when it’s in progress. Ask them about how they choose their topics, what they find challenging, and what they find most fulfilling.

  3. Support your kids in writing for authentic audiences. An authentic audience in this case could mean writing a catchy poster for a lemonade stand, writing a letter to a business or company, or writing a message to friends and family.

  4. Read to and with your kids. And, as you read, discuss your observations, questions, and critiques.

  5. Get to The Ink Spot Writing Studio! We have classes to strengthen every writing skill that incorporate every genre of writing. Try a free class anytime.

See you at the studio! :-)
