Maxwell, age 19
TIS writer from ages 11-16
Maxwell is a hard-working student and beloved teen counselor at our studio. After several years’ experience in our summer camp program, Maxwell graduated to the role of teen counselor, where he helped mentor and support younger students. In his time here, Maxwell always elevated the rigor of every project, going above and beyond even the highest expectations to achieve his vision as a writer and creator. Now, Maxwell continues that resolute work ethic in his studies as a college student at UCSD.
Maxwell, how did your learning here at the studio feel different from school?
Attending The Ink Spot has broadened my scope of writing. Typically, my school only promoted analyzing long-form texts or poetry and forming various essays, but my camps at The Ink Spot emphasized more broad and creative forms writing. Not only is having exposure to creative writing crucial to becoming a mature writer, but it also makes you appreciate and enjoy writing much more.
What were you expecting when you first joined TIS and what surprised you about your experience here?
When I started at the studio, I was afraid I'd be alienated and have to rely on myself for comfort. I thought The Ink Spot would be like many other learning institution, where economic growth is most important. The inclusivity and care given to every student at TIS have allowed me to become a person with greater self-esteem and self-worth. When I'm in the studio, I feel a sense of comfort comparable only to home.
What’s your favorite camp theme in all that you’ve experienced here?
One of my favorite camp themes is "Entrepreneurs Week" because it teaches students an essential part of the capitalist process, finding one's niche. With drop shipping and unpaid labor heavily promoted on social media, this camp theme upholds morality and equity within business management.
Maxwell’s awesome dad Jeff says:
”Writing is a vital language skill to excel in. My son started attending writing camps at The Ink Spot at 9 and he is now a Freshman at UCSD majoring in Biology. I believe The Ink Spot is instrumental in this achievement. We had tried numerous writing classes but The Ink Spot is the only place that made learning to write as fun as it can be.”
